Jamie Beau

Jamie Beau took the time out of his busy schedule to sit down to have a chat with Chas. He told us about how he got into music and his biggest influences and much more. So here is the interview for you all to read and find out more about Jamie.

This is Chas from Atlantic Radio Uk and I’m here to interview the wonderful and talented Jamie Beau.

Hello Jamie, thanks for taking the time to do this interview and to let all the Atlantic Radio Uk listeners about you and your music.

Chas - Can you tell the listeners where you’re from?

Jamie - I’m from Derbyshire

Chas - When and how did you first become interested in music?

Jamie - At the tender age of 7 I started playing guitar as a way of spending time with my dad. I was always into music as a child going though various phases, the first being a dream of becoming a rapper like NWA and Vanilla Ice (quite a bizarre mix but those were the tapes I had access to when I was little) moving into wanting to be in an band that got to have awesome t-shirts like Iron Maiden did I grew up in Castle Donington so The rock festival there always inspired interest … that stuck for a while as I spent many years playing thrash metal and then eventually around 3 years ago I got in to acoustic music.

Chas - How long have you been playing music?

Jamie - Around 20 years now. In various incarnations of course.

Chas - Does anyone in your family play music?

Jamie - As I said my dad likes to play, and apparently my great grandma was a really amazing pianist too. So I guess there’s something in the blood there.

Chas - What are your musical influences?

Jamie - They range wildly - Thomas Leeb, Ben Howard, Jeff Buckley, Guy Garvey (& Elbow of course) Chris Cornell and the Smashing Pumpkins are probably the main influences. but I draw influence from all sorts of places.

Chas - If you could sing with one artist or band who would it be and why?

Jamie - Jeff Buckley (were he still alive that is) for sure, he's such an incredible influence that I’d learn so much.

Chas - Where have you performed your music so far?

Jamie - I’ve played many festivals over the last few years and everything from toilet gigs to 500+ theatres. It ranges wildly depending on a number of factors really. I’m hoping to get across to the rest of Europe next year.

Chas - If you could play one venue in the world where it be?

Jamie - To be honest I’d be happy playing one of the stages Glastonbury I love that festival and it’s kind of been an ambitin to play there one day.

Chas - What else do you do besides play music?

Jamie - I’m a graphic designer for work, I love cooking and just hanging out with my wife and dog really. Taking little Walter out on a nice long walk is my idea of perfection.

Chas - Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?

Jamie - Ok this is a bizarre mix but: Straight out of Compton, Mama’s and the Papas stuff (mum loved them) an ELO or Elkie Brookes tape was always on for a long car journey. Bill Withers is still a fav of mine. I always remember the Beatles Red compilation records being in the house and spending ages reading the sleeve notes.

Chas - Who are your favourite musicians? Groups? CD's?

Jamie - Jeff Buckley - Grace is a flawless album. Foo Fighters - the colour and the shape doesn't have a bad song on it. Ben Howard - Every Kingdom really inspired me to further my acoustic solo career. Sound garden - Superunknown was listened to once a month when I was growing up. there really are tons to be honest, how long have you got?

Chas - Have you been in competitions?

Jamie - No not really.

Chas - Do you perform in public? If so where have you played?

Jamie - Yes indeed, regularly. In fact the last gig I played was in Milton Keynes at the Stables. I was supporting Sandi Thom and it was an incredible gig.

Chas - Do you get nervous before a performance?

Jamie - I used to, Quite a lot. and still do from time to time when there’s a big gig coming up but I’ve learnt to channel that into a positive now so it actually helps make for a better gig.

Chas - What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous?

Jamie - Ride through it. It’s good that you're nervous because it means you care about it, just don't let it be the master of you.

Chas - How often and for how long do you practice?

Jamie - if there are no gigs coming up usually around 2 hours or so just to keep my hand in but when there’s a run of gigs 3 hours a day minimum. Same when recording is coming up.

Chas - Where do you hope to be in say 5 years or more?

Jamie - I hope to be happy, healthy and have released a few more albums, played some nice gigs and played Glasto a few times ;)

Chas - If listeners want to get in touch with you or want to hear more of you music how can they get in touch?

Jamie - Just pop on to jamiebeau.com they can get all the info there and even get some free music too.

Chas - Is there anything you would like to say to the wonderful Atlantic Radio Uk listeners?

Jamie - Thanks for listening, you rule and come look me up sometime if you’d like.

I would like to thank you Jamie for taking the time to do this interview. Atlantic Radio Uk and the listeners wish you all the best in the future and we hope to have you back on Atlantic Radio Uk.
